The Mahindra Thar Roxx is unmistakably an evolution of the 3-door Thar, yet it introduces significant design enhancements that set it apart. It sits on 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, giving it a commanding presence on the road. The wider track and offset wheels contribute to its robust stance, making it look fit for both urban and off-road adventures.
A notable design shift is the introduction of a new double-stacked six-slot grille, replacing the signature seven-slot grille of the 3-door Thar, which aligns with Mahindra's aim to carve out a distinct identity. The LED projector headlights with C-shaped DRLs and matching LED taillights signal a new design direction for Mahindra.
The full metal roof, panoramic sunroof, and other design elements like the slanted C-pillar and distinctive rear quarter glass add a touch of modernity to the Roxx, without losing its rugged appeal.
The Mahindra Thar Roxx offers a range of powertrain options, ensuring there’s something for every driver.
It comes with a choice between a 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine, both available with automatic or manual transmissions.
The diesel variant includes a 4x4 option, making it more versatile for off-road enthusiasts.
The petrol-automatic variant is the most powerful, delivering 177hp, which is 27hp more than the 3-door Thar. The engines are well-calibrated for performance, offering strong and linear power delivery.
The 6-speed Aisin torque converter in the petrol-automatic provides smooth and responsive shifts, enhancing the driving experience. The diesel engine, with its broad torque spread, is particularly impressive, offering strong low-end performance and excellent refinement, making it a great option for both off-road adventures and highway cruising.
Stepping inside the Mahindra Thar Roxx, you’re greeted with a cabin that has been significantly upgraded compared to its 3-door counterpart. The dashboard is similar, but hard-wearing plastics have been replaced with soft-touch materials, adding a premium feel.
The cabin is a mix of soft-touch plastics, brushed metal, piano black finishes, and leatherette on the top variants, providing an inviting atmosphere. The front seats are supportive, with generous bolstering and optional ventilation, while the rear seats benefit from the longer wheelbase, offering ample legroom and comfort for long journeys.
The Roxx also comes loaded with features, including a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, electronic parking brake, 360-degree camera, ambient lighting, Level 2 ADAS, wireless charging, and more. However, the digital instrument display can be cumbersome to use, with a slow and somewhat inconvenient interface.
Safety and comfort have been given significant attention in the Mahindra Thar Roxx. The new fourth-generation (4G) body-on-frame chassis not only improves ride quality but also enhances safety and refinement.
The chassis is stiffer and lighter, with a new multi-link suspension system and Watt’s linkage, improving body control and reducing body roll. The Roxx also features electrical power steering, replacing the hydraulic unit in the 3-door Thar, making it easier to handle in various driving conditions.
The cabin is well-insulated, with excellent sound suppression to keep out road and engine noise, contributing to a more comfortable ride. Safety features like the 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS add an extra layer of security, making the Roxx a well-rounded package for both urban and off-road driving.
One of the standout features of the Mahindra Thar Roxx is its ride and handling, particularly for a body-on-frame SUV. The Roxx benefits from a new suspension setup that significantly improves ride comfort and handling stability.
The steering is light and progressive, offering a good sense of control even at high speeds. While the ride can be a bit lumpy at low speeds due to the body-on-frame construction, it’s far from uncomfortable, and the large tires help smooth out most road imperfections.
Off-road, the Roxx shines with its massive ground clearance and capable suspension, easily tackling rough terrains. The overall ride quality is softer, making it more comfortable for urban driving, where the Roxx is expected to spend most of its time.
Despite its size and weight, the Roxx handles surprisingly well, offering a balanced and confident driving experience.
Driving the Mahindra Thar Roxx is thrilling. The tough design is ideal for off-roading. The sophisticated multimedia system entertains me on lengthy rides in the large cabin. Thar Roxx's steadiness and strength made me feel confident driving during a severe thunderstorm. It's an adventurer’s friend! Its strong Indian market presence proves its excellence. Comfort makes it a top pick above other automobiles.
