What could have been better?The Land Rover Defender is an iconic off-roading luxury SUV which is widely known for its ruggedness, versatility, and advanced tech. The Defender caters to luxury SUV buyers and adventure enthusiasts alike.
Exterior Design
The Land Rover Defender’s silhouette features minimal front and rear overhangs, square-shaped matrix LED headlights, smoked taillights, and a side-hinged rear tailgate with an externally mounted spare wheel-elements which are a tribute to the original Defender. The robust aluminium monocoque chassis, known as the D7x Architecture, is up to three times stiffer than traditional body-on-frame designs and enhances durability and safety.
Step inside the Defender, and the customers get greeted with a spacious cabin available in five, six, seven, or eight-seat layouts, depending on the variant. The Defender also features premium materials such as Windsor leather, Kvadrat fabric and semi-aniline leather paired with durable rubber flooring. Other notable elements include 14-way electrically adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated captain seats in the second row (on select variants), and a panoramic sunroof. Speaking about the tech features, the Defender features an 11.4-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Meridian surround sound system, four-zone climate control, a head-up display, and a 360-degree surround camera. Additional features include clever storage solutions, configurable cabin lighting, and advanced air purification systems.
The Land Rover Defender features a five-star Euro NCAP rating, and the standard safety features include six airbags, three ISOFIX mounting points, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot assist, lane keep assist, rear collision monitor, adaptive cruise control, driver condition monitor, traffic sign recognition, and wade sensing for water crossings. Other safety features include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as a 3D surround camera, clear exit monitor, and rear traffic monitor that make both off-roading and city driving safer and more convenient.
Engine & Performance
The Land Rover Defender can be purchased in multiple variants across petrol and diesel options. The petrol options include a 2.0L turbocharged engine which generates a power of 296 bhp and 400 Nm of torque and a 3.0L six-cylinder engine which generates a power of 394 bhp and 550 Nm of torque. More petrol options are a 5.0L V8 engine which generates a power of 518 bhp and 625 Nm of torque and the new 4.4L V8 Octa variant which generates a power of 626 bhp and 750 Nm of torque. The diesel options within the Defender include a 3.0L mild-hybrid engine which generates power up to 345 bhp and up to 700 Nm of torque.

5The Land Rover Defender is a great car when it comes to off-roading and its rugged design matches its capabilities. I have taken it on many long trips, covering over 14,000 kms and it handles tough terrains like a pro. The 2.0L engine offers incredible torque and while the mileage of 8 kmpl is not the best, the adventurous spirit of the Defender makes up for it. The interior is comfortable and full of technology, making it a great experience even on the worst roads.
4Although I enjoy the tough appeal of the Land Rover Defender, I recently purchased it and find the maintenance expenses rather expensive. My first service left me astounded to find a bill of ₹50,000! I recall talking about this with a friend who cautioned me on the costs, but I had no idea how big they would be. If you're thinking about it, budget carefully for upkeep; the adventure is well worth it, but be ready!
